Life or Death Choice: How to Operate a Mouth

Do you gossip?  Let me ask that another way.  Do you speak life over and into people or death?

Over the past few weeks, the Lord has been speaking to me about how I use my words.  Specifically, He's been challenging me about every word that comes out of my mouth. In fact, I can see my friend Heather's acronymn for the word THINK.

Robin, is what you are saying Thoughtful?
Robin, is what you are saying Honest?
Robin, is what you are saying Inspiring?
Robin, is what you are saying Needed?
Robin, is what you are saying Knowledge?

I must be honest, as much as I want to be a channel of Jesus' peace, sometimes this God-Fearing woman gets the blues and just lets loose.   Vile, deadly things come out of my mouth.

Anger. Jealousy. Unforgiveness. Impatience. Gossip. Slander.

What does God say about that?

Out of the mouth the heart speaks. Oye vey. Curses...Death.

However, there are days, even weeks, when I am walking and shining the light , singing God's praises, and speaking life over every person and situation that comes across my path.

Peace. Joy. Contentment. Forgiveness. Patience. Understanding. Compassion.

Out of the mouth the heart speaks.  Yay!  Blessings...Life!

Every day, every hour, every minute, and every second we have a choice to live as a conduit of Jesus' love.  Christ is in us, Jesus people!  Our mouths can prevent those around us from seeing Jesus. They can prevent thirsty people from taking a drink of the Living Water.

As conduits (i.e., faucets, garden hoses, cracked vases), all we have to do is let the Living Water flow through.

Imagine a garden hose.  Picture yourself turning on the water.  Look at yourself unrolling the hose.  Can you see it?  Can you see yourself stretching out the hose? Wait, what is that? There isn't any water flowing though.   Dumb hose, kinked itself up.  See yourself identifying the kink, bending down to pick up and straighten out that section of the hose.  Now look, the water is flowing out.

When we have salavation, the Holy Spirit comes to reside in us.  It is like turning on the faucet.  The very glory of  God, the Living Water is present inside of us.  We are the conduit...the hose.  All that Jesus accomplished, accomplishes and will accomplish is there waiting to flow out to do His work in us and through us.  When the Holy Spirit shows us an area in our life that is knotted up with sin, like the kinked hose, He implores us to unkink it.  Gossip, slander, arguing, grumbling , complaining, and malicious talk kink the hose.

We unwind the hose by talking to God.

Instead of gossiping about an annoying co-worker, complaining about your spouse, or arguing with your child...stop! Be silent!  Do not let your mouth speak curses and death over the people around you.

Try this!
  • Remove yourself from the problem or the person so that you can pray.
  • Pause and pray before sending that email.
  • Take a deep breath, breathe the very name of God...YHWH.
  • Take a walk ask God what to say.
  • Say only positive and encouraging things about the situation or person OR say nothing at all.
Ponder this:
Do everything without grumbling or arguing so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation."Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky  as you hold firmly to the word of life. (Phillipians 2: 14- 16  NIV)

For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”   If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other. (Galatians 5:14 NIV)
